The hammerhead shark is perhaps one of the most recognizable fish in the ocean. The strangely shaped head, called a cephalofoil, may give the shark increased maneuverability while hunting and an enhanced sense of smell. It also contains electric sensors that aid the shark in finding fish. The spacing of the eyes may also afford a wider field of vision.

There are ten species of hammerheads. The smallest is only three feet in length, while the largest is more than 20 feet.

Hammerheads display unique behaviors are well. They are viviparous, meaning they give birth to live young rather than laying eggs, as do most other fish. They are also known to congregate in huge schools during the day.

Most sharks attack only when defending themselves or reacting to a perceived food source. Many species eat only bottom-dwelling creatures such as crabs.

Hammerhead sharks have long excited the human imagination. In Hawaiian mythology, for example, sharks are considered to be "gods of the sea." The rare sighting of a hammerhead shark near Hawaiian waters is thought to be a good omen, meaning that the shark is protecting the people.

In popular culture, hammerhead sharks appear in such television cartoons as Street Sharks and feature films such as Finding Nemo (2003). Small hammerhead sharks are popular denizens of public aquariums.
