Learn More About The Meteor Drawing

That's not the sky falling - it's a shooting star! Are you an avid stargazer, or are you learning about the solar system in school? Whether as a school science project or just for fun, you can learn how to draw a meteor.

What is the difference between a meteor, a meteoroid, a meteorite, and an asteroid?

An asteroid is a space rock - it can be made of stone, iron, or ice and of many sizes. Small asteroids are called meteoroids.

The term “meteor” describes the light emitted from an asteroid or meteoroid as it burns up in the atmosphere; an abundance of meteors is known as a meteor shower.

Though we often call them "shooting stars," meteors aren't stars at all.

The meteorite is the rock that survives the Earth’s atmosphere and makes it to the ground. Meteorites can be the size of a pebble or a house.

Meteorites are sought after by scientists and collectors, making them very valuable. Large meteors can be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

What about a comet? Comets are bodies of ice and dust that leave a long trail of debris behind them.

They may resemble slow-moving meteors, but they differ in that they are far out in space. They never enter Earth’s atmosphere.

So, do you have all that vocabulary and terminology down? Consider two more meteor terms.

A bolide is an asteroid that explodes when it reaches Earth’s atmosphere, and a fireball is any meteor with a brightness greater than the planet Venus.
