Learn More About The Noose Drawing

A noose is a type of coiled rope. The most innocuous use of a noose is the lasso.

A lasso consists of a rope, 60 to 100 feet in length, with a slip noose at the end. Skilled cowboys use the lasso to capture horses, cattle, or other animals.

They throw the lasso in such a way that the noose goes over the animal's head and tightens like a leash. Alternatively, the animal may be caught by the foot instead.

Nooses have also been used to execute criminals by hanging. This method of punishment has been used since ancient times, and is especially associated with the gallows of Medieval Europe and the American West.

In the United States, however, the noose is often seen as a notorious symbol because of its association with lynching, a type of mob violence in which a person is executed under the pretext of administering justice but without a proper trial. Racial prejudice was often a motivating factor.

In art, the noose may be representative of cowboy culture as in the lasso, or it may be used to depict the horrors of times past.

Its use can also be controversial. For example, an art installation of multi-colored nooses, representing oppressed peoples, had to be removed from the Austin Peay State University campus in the United States due to complaints from local citizens.
