To form the stem, draw another, smaller, curved shape, filling the gap to enclose the figure.

Learn More About The Pizza Drawing

Foods similar to pizza have been around for a very long time. A topped flat bread called focaccia was eaten by the ancient Romans. The ancient Greeks enjoyed a similar treat called plakous.

Almost all ancient societies had some sort of flat bread to which they added tasty toppings, including wheat based cakes from China and the flat naan bread of South Asia.

What of the modern pizza? The word itself was first recorded in 997 A.D. In the 16th century in Naples, Italy, a flatbread called pizza was sold to poor laborers by street vendors.

Most of these early pizzas, however, were sweets. Finally, in 1889, a "Pizza Margherita" was created to resemble the Italian flag, topped with tomatoes, basil and mozzarella - and thus the modern pizza was born.

By the early 1990s, pizzas were entering both cookbooks and eateries.

Today, pizza has become a popular culture phenomenon in North America and elsewhere. In the United States, cities such as Chicago and New York City take pride in their unique styles of pizza.

Cartoons, movies, and television shows often show characters eating this dish. For example, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are known for their love of pizza.

Sometimes, the pizza is a character in itself - for example, Pizzaface from the 1990s sitcom All That, and Pa' Pizza, one of the popular Shopkins figurines.
