Do you like to play with slime? Ooey, gooey slime, in many colors and often containing glitter or small toys, has been a popular play item since 1976. Many children and adults alike make their own toy slime using paste.

Slime first came into the public eye with the Nickelodeon's You Can't Do That on Television, which debuted in 1979.

This comedy sketch series was directed at teens and pre-teens, and it often featured a dousing in green slime when one of the actors uttered the words, "I don't know."

"Sliming," as it came to be called, migrated to other Nickelodeon shows as well, such as Double Dare and Figure It Out.

The network's sliming antics have made other pop culture appearances as well, such as in the opening of the film Fatal Attraction (1987).

What was that Nickelodeon slime made out of, anyway? Discovering its well-guarded secret was a frequent plot of television shows.

In reality, the slime consisted of green gelatin, flour, water, oatmeal, and soap. The soap made it easier to wash the slime out of the actors' hair and clothing.

Sometimes, slime is given a mind of its own. One example is Slimer, a green ghost of the Ghostbusters franchise. Another is Adventure Time's Slime Princess. This drawing guide features a similar character.
