How did teddy bears come to be the one stuffed toy hugged by almost every child? Or the gift you give your girlfriend on Valentine's Day? The story of a U.S. president, a rifle, and a hunting trip might surprise you.

In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt went on a hunting trip in Mississippi, USA. One of the president's assistants didn't think it proper that the trip end without the president capturing his quarry - a bear. So, this assistant trapped a bear and tied it to a tree.

Roosevelt, however, refused to shoot the bear. He felt it was wrong and unsportsmanlike to shoot an animal that could not escape or defend itself.

A newspaper cartoonist drew a picture of this scene, which inspired a Brooklyn candy shop owner to dedicate a toy bear to the president. He called the toy "Teddy's bear." Soon, stuffed teddy bears were popular with children around the world.
