"Don't keep all your eggs in one basket." This is a maxim, or wise saying, that means if you invest all your time, energy, or money in just one thing, you could lose it all if that venture fails.

What about the Easter basket, a decorated basket filled with colored eggs, candy, food, and toys? Where did this tradition originate?

One of the oldest Easter basket traditions hails from seventh century Poland.

Baskets were lined with white napkins, filled with special foods, and decorated with sprigs of an evergreen called boxwood. The baskets were blessed by the church on the Saturday before Easter.

The food inside was either consumed on Easter or taken to cemeteries as an offering to the deceased.

According to legends from Germany, the Easter bunny visited the homes of children on the night before Easter.

If the children were good, he would leave eggs and other items in the nests they had made out of their hats and bonnets - a sort of Easter basket. This legend was recorded as early as the 1600s.

Today, Easter baskets filled with candy and toys can be purchased at many stores.

They may have themes to reflect children's interests, such as superheroes or Barbie dolls.

Easter baskets are also used during Easter egg hunts, in which children race to fill their baskets with hidden eggs.
