Learn More About The Igloo Drawing

The igloo is an icon of the far north, especially the Arctic regions of Alaska, Greenland, and Canada.

The term is from an Eskimo word meaning "house," and igloos still serve as temporary winter homes for some among the Inuit people.

Small igloos may be built as a temporary shelter for just a few nights, perhaps during a hunting trip; larger igloos are more permanent.

Some are designed with many rooms to house multiple families, or smaller igloos may be connected by means of their entry tunnels.

Igloos are constructed from blocks of packed snow, which are cut from compact snow drifts using a sword-like snow knife. The blocks are generally two feet tall, four feet long, and eight inches thick.

The blocks are arranged in a spiral to form the dome-shaped structure. Crevices are packed with snow, but a hole is left at the top for ventilation; a clear piece of ice might be used for a window.

A skilled craftsman can build an igloo in one to two hours. The igloo is unique in that it is the only dome that doesn't need extra support to hold it up.

Is it warm inside an igloo? Cold wind is kept out by hanging a cloth or animal skin over the opening. A bank of snow is often built outside the opening to divert the wind.

Air pockets trapped inside the snow serve as insulation, and a fire can be lit in a hollow space at the center of the igloo.

The heat from the fire may cause some of the snow on the interior of the blocks to melt, but when this refreezes, it actually makes the structure stronger.

An igloo that is built well can support a full grown man standing on its roof.
