Owls are very interesting birds. They are raptors like eagles and hawks - they hunt smaller birds and mammals. Unlike most birds, though, owls are nocturnal, meaning they are active at night.

Owls are known for their large eyes. Big eyes collect the scant light of the moon and allow the owls to see in the dark. They also have special feathers that allow them to fly silently.

These qualities, along with their haunting "hoo-hoo" call, made owls an object of fear in some cultures and they were seen as an omen of bad luck. In ancient Greek mythology, however, owls were associated with Athena, the goddess of reason or wisdom.

Owls were believed to be very wise or know events in advance. For this reason, "wise old owls" are still associated with graduations in western culture.

Owls have often been a subject of literature and cartoons. In Disney's Winnie the Pooh, Owl is a friend of Pooh. Another example is the book series and film Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole.

The owl in this illustration resembles the great horned owl, one of the largest owl species. Those points on his head aren't really horns, though. They are actually feathers that suggest the appearance of horns or ears.
