"If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants."
- Isaac Newton

Are you studying about Isaac Newton in school or via remote learning? Let's find out what made him so famous.

Sir Isaac Newton was an English physicist and mathematician who lived from 1642 to 1727. He made scientific breakthroughs in the sciences of optics, mechanics, and physics.

He invented the reflecting telescope and a type of advanced math called calculus. He also described the three laws of motion, which include:

  • The First Law of Motion, that an "object in motion will continue to move in the same direction and speed unless forces act on it." This is also called inertia.
  • The Second Law of Motion, that "the greater the mass of an object, the more force it will take to accelerate the object."
  • And the Third Law of Motion, that "for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."

Why is Isaac Newton holding an apple in our illustration? It's not an apple for the teacher, or an apple a day to keep the doctor away.

Newton is most famous for discovering gravity - that objects fall toward the center of the earth. It is rumored that his inspiration was seeing an apple fall from a tree.
