Learn More About The School Books Drawing

Books are a common symbol of school days. This is due in large part to the invention of the printing press some 600 years ago. Before books could be printed en masse, they had to be copied by hand and were very expensive.

Did you know? School books haven't always looked as they do today - leaves of paper between a sturdy cover. Several hundred years ago, children in America and Europe used hornbooks.

These were wooden paddles with a sheet of paper attached, bearing information such as the alphabet, counting numbers, and a set of bible verses known as "the Lord's Prayer."

The paper was covered with a thin layer of cow horn in order to preserve it.

Even earlier in history, children were taught to read and write from long, rolled sheets of paper known as scrolls.

At other times, wax was poured into a metal or wooden frame.

Children used a pointed stick called a stylus to carve into the wax, practicing writing. Later, the words could be erased by smoothing the wax, and the tablet reused.
