During the 1400s, fishermen's wives on the English island of Jersey knitted wool garments for their husbands. Because of wool's natural oils, the garments kept the men warm even in damp conditions.

These garments were called jerseys, and their popularity spread throughout Europe. Around 1890, the garment was adopted by American athletes, who called it a sweater. Athletes used the sweaters to ward off the cold before and after events.

By the 1920s, sweaters entered the world of high fashion. Designers such as Coco Chanel added sweaters to their clothing lines.

Today, sweaters are worn by men, women, and children. They may be made of wool, cotton, or synthetic materials. They come in many styles, from turtlenecks to cardigans to sweater dresses, and everything in between.

Themed sweaters are popular around certain holidays. From this has evolved a modern tradition known as the "ugly sweater party." Partygoers compete to see who can find the most outrageous sweater to wear, and prizes are often awarded.

Sweaters also play a role in popular culture. For example, Mr. Rogers of the children's show Mr. Roger's Neighborhood famously put on a cardigan style sweater at the beginning of every episode.

The purpose of this was to establish a routine and a sense of familiarity that would be comforting to young viewers. One of his sweaters is on display at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C., U.S.A.
