You’ll notice that most of the whales in our example images are bluish-grey with lighter bellies. Why is that? Many whales have skin that is pigmented black or grey. But when sunlight passes through the water, the water absorbs longer-wavelength colors like red.
That leaves only blue light to be reflected off the whales’ bodies. This makes both the water and the whales appear blue.
The underbellies are lighter as a form of camouflage. If you’re above the whale looking down into the water, its dark skin blends in with the deep ocean below. If you’re below the whale, looking up, its lighter belly blends end with the bright sun sparkling off the waves above.
