Learn how to draw a great looking Atom with easy drawing instructions and video tutorial.
By following the simple steps, you too can easily draw a perfect Atom.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing an Atom
How to Draw a Great Looking Atom for Kids and Beginners - Step 1
1. Begin by drawing a circle. This will form the atom's nucleus.
Drawing Step 2
2. Draw a smaller circle some distance away from the first circle. This forms the first electron.

Drawing Step 3
3. Draw an incomplete oval around the nucleus. The electron should be centered as if the line is passing through it. This oval indicates the electron's path of rotation around the nucleus.
Drawing Step 4
4. Draw another curved line roughly parallel to the first. Start at the electron, and bring the line around to meet the open end of the incomplete oval at a sharp point.
Drawing Step 5
5. Draw another small circle outside of the oval, forming another electron.
Drawing Step 6
6. Draw another path of rotation, as if it is passing behind the first. Draw a pair of curved lines between the electron and the previous path. On the other side of the path, draw another set of curved lines, erasing as necessary. Finally, draw two short lines that meet at a point.
Drawing Step 7
7. Draw a third electron, a small circle just outside the bounds of the figure.

8. Draw this electron's path of rotation passing behind the other two. First, draw a pair of curved lines between the electron and the nearly horizontal rotation. Then, draw curved lines between the vertical and horizontal rotations, erasing as necessary. Draw two "C" shaped lines arching outward from this path of rotation and returning to it. Draw another pair of curved lines between the two rotations, and a final pair that meets at a sharp point.

9. Draw single or double curved lines just beyond the outermost points of the paths of rotation. This helps create a sense of movement as the electrons whizz around the nucleus.
Color Your Atom Drawing
Color your cartoon atom. Diagrams of atoms often shade the protons, neutrons, and electrons in different colors. You can create a "Caution: Radiation" sign by coloring your atom black and giving it a yellow background.

Learn More About The Atom Drawing
The atom is the "smallest unit into which matter can be divided without the release of electrically charged particles." Atoms are considered the building blocks of chemistry.
Did you know? Atoms are mostly empty space. Just as the planets revolve around the sun at a great distance from one another, the tiny protons and neutrons of the nucleus are far removed from the minuscule electrons.
The electrons of one atom can interact with those of another, forming chemical bonds and constructing molecules.
Each type of atom can be identified as a specific element on the periodic table. Our drawing guide depicts lithium, the third element, because it has three electrons.

The atom in our drawing guide is a simplified version of the atom. Such diagrams are often used in science classes, cartoons, and signage indicating radiation.
This is an old-style diagram; it is now known that the exact location of the electrons can not be detected. Therefore, the electrons are now depicted as a "cloud" rather than a single object with a fixed rotation.
A number of cartoon characters have had the atom as their emblem. These include Atom Ant, the Atom, and Captain Atom.
