Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing an Open Book

How to Draw a Great Looking Open Book for Kids and Beginners - Step 1

1. Begin as you would an actual book - with the first page. Draw three curved lines to outline a wavy, partial rectangle shape. Notice that the lines of the top and bottom of the page are roughly parallel, and the side of the page almost straight.
Drawing Step 2

2. Draw a line from the bottom of the page, up to the top of the page, outlining the spine or binding. Then, let the line continue to form the top of the next page. Use two more curved lines to fully enclose the page.

Drawing Step 3

3. Draw more pages beneath these. Use curved lines to outline the rectangular shapes partially hidden by the first pages. Notice the straight line where two of the pages come together at the spine.
Drawing Step 4

4. Draw a rounded triangle at the base of the spine. At opposite corners, draw a series of overlapping curved lines to indicate page corners. Then, connect the corners and the spine using a series of nearly straight lines.
Drawing Step 5

5. Extend short straight lines from the spine and connect them with a curved line. Then, draw nearly straight lines parallel with the last, connecting the corners to the spine. This outlines the book's cover.
Drawing Step 6

6. Detail the page edges. Draw curved lines from the spine to the corner. Use two curved lines, connected with a "V" shaped line, to form a bookmark ribbon. Erase as necessary.
Drawing Step 7

7. Draw curved lines of various lengths from the spine to the corner to texture the page edges.

In the past, books hardly resembled what we read today. They were made from stone, rolled into scrolls, or written on animal skin.
"Before the invention and adoption of the printing press, almost all books were copied by hand, which made books expensive and comparatively rare."
As early as the 1000s, movable type printing was invented in Asia. Around 1450, Johannes Gutenberg independently invented such a printing press, making books more readily available in Europe. His most famous publication was the Gutenberg Bible.

The rest of the top 10 books in the world fall short of 1 billion copies. These include Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-Tung, Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, Truth That Leads to Eternal Life, and What Does the Bible Really Teach?
