1. Begin by drawing a guideline grid. This will help you place the facial features in later steps.

Draw a vertical line, then draw a circle around it. Draw a horizontal line below the midpoint of the circle. It should cross the vertical line at a perpendicular angle and meet the sides of the circle.

Draw a shorter horizontal line crossing the vertical line below the circle.

2. Use a long curved line to outline the ears and the lower half of the face. Connect the ears to the head where the horizontal grid line meets the circle. The line of the chin should meet the bottom of the vertical line.

Detail the inside of each ear with a curved line.

Use the gridlines to place the mouth. It should rest on the shorter horizontal line, centered on the vertical line.

3. Erase the bottom of the circle and the lower horizontal line.

Then, use the grid to place the nose and eyes. They should be placed between the vertical line and the ears. The top of each eye should meet the horizontal line, with the eyelid arching above it.

Position the negative eyebrows above the eyes, a short distance above the horizontal line.

Draw the nose between the horizontal line and the bottom of the face, just to the left of the vertical line.

8. Color your picture.

Different types of glasses

Now that you've drawn your girl with glasses, you might consider different ways of shading the lenses (see the reference picture below).

In the top example, the lenses are clear. You can see the shading on the bottom and sides of each lens. This indicates the presence of the frame behind the lenses. Just as you can see the frame through the lenses, so you can see the character's eyes.

Sometimes, a reflection effect or glare is used. In this case, the lenses are shaded white and diagonal lines are drawn across them. This may be done to hide a character's eyes or precede a dramatic moment. In anime, the lens glare may "flash" with different glare lines as the character moves.

Finally, your character may be wearing sunglasses. In this case, the lenses are shaded black or some other color. They may have a white reflection effect. Sunglasses may hide a character's identity, make him look cool, or simply protect his eyes on a sunny day.

Other Considerations When Drawing Anime Glasses

Placement of Glasses

It may seem obvious that glasses are placed over a character's eyes, but a sizable amount of variation can occur.

For example, an elderly person, a librarian, or a teacher might wear their glasses closer to the end of their nose. Some characters might raise their glasses to get a better look at something. Some might even place them on the forehead or top of the head for a time.

Glasses Styles

Glasses come in many styles. The frames may be thick or thin, the lenses rectangular, round, oval-shaped, or even heart-shaped.

Have you ever seen glasses where part of the frame is not drawn? This, too, is a common style. Usually, the upper portion of the frame is omitted. Some glasses even have no frame around the lenses, with only the nose-piece connecting them.

Reasons to Draw Glasses

Characters may wear glasses for many reasons. Some have eyesight issues. At other times, glasses may be linked to a social standing, such as a professor or a "nerdy" kid who gets picked on.

What to draw next?

Now that you've drawn your character with one type of glasses, why not try others? Draw thick, chunky frames; glasses with no frames at the top; sunglasses; or thick goggles.

You can also try your hand at other characters with glasses, such as this man with anime beard.
