How to Draw the Nervous System for Kids

1. Begin the nervous system for kids outline by drawing a head in profile. Use a series of curved lines to trace the chin, lips, nose, forehead, hair, and neck.

2. Use long curved lines to sketch the shoulders and arms. Then use curved lines, doubled back on themselves, to begin drawing the fingers.

3. Finish drawing the fingers, fully enclosing the hands. Use long curved lines to sketch the torso and legs.

4. Enclose the bottoms of the legs, using long curved lines to draw the feet.

Notice the scalloped pattern of the toes. In the person's head, draw the brain. Use a scalloped, wavy line, noticing how it overlaps itself on the bottom.

5. Use a curved line to enclose the occipital lobe at the bottom of the brain.

Then extend two long, curved lines that meet in the lower torso. From these, extend short lines in the neck, longer lines in the shoulders, and very long lines traveling down the arms into the hands.

6. Draw more lines down the arms, noting how one branches from the previous line and overlaps it. Extend curved lines resembling ribs from the spinal cord in the torso.

7. Extend more riblike, short lines, then draw a series of long curved lines from the spinal cord to the legs and feet. Notice where they cross over one another.

8. Draw shorter, "Y" like lines branching from the previous lines into the face, arms, hands, lower torso, legs, and feet.

9. Label the parts of the nervous system. Starting with the spinal cord and working clockwise, label the cerebellum, brain, cranial nerves, and peripheral nerves.

Draw straight lines from each vocabulary term to its respective part. Further label the items on the left as being part of the central nervous system and those on the right as part of the peripheral nervous system.
