Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Cicada

How to Draw a Great Looking Cicada for Kids and Beginners - Step 1

1. Begin the cicada outline by drawing the insect's face. First, draw an oval and shade a smaller oval inside it.
This is the cicada's eye. Using curved lines, enclose an irregular oval shape around the eye and another shape overlapping it.
Drawing Step 2

2. Use a curved line to enclose a partial circle on the opposite side of the head, indicating the remaining eye.
Then, use curved lines to draw a series of elongated round shapes overlapping one another. This is the first of the insect's legs. Connect the head and leg with three curved lines.

Drawing Step 3

3. From the end of the leg, extend two curved lines, and connect them at the end with a "V" shaped line. This is the bug's foot.
Below the first leg, draw a second leg. Again, use curved lines to create the overlapping rounded shapes. Extend two curved lines and connect the ends with a "V" shaped line.
Drawing Step 4

4. Next, draw the cicada's large wing. Use a long curved line for two sides of the loosely triangular shape, then connect the ends with a scalloped line.
Texture the wing with a curved line that doubles back on itself. Draw the tops of the cicada's thorax and abdomen above the wing, using curved lines.
Drawing Step 5

5. Continue texturing the wing by drawing its wide veins. Use pairs of long curved lines that meet at points.
Drawing Step 6

6. Draw the abdomen visible through the clear part of the wing. Use curved lines that meet at a gentle point.
Then, draw the third leg. Again, use curved lines to create the overlapping rounded shapes. Extend two curved lines and connect the ends with a "V" shaped line.
Drawing Step 7

7. Use curved lines to draw smaller veins on the clear part of the wing. Texture the front of the head with curved lines, and extend two curved lines upward to indicate the antennae. Begin drawing the fourth leg.
