Sadness is a universal emotion. It is related to grief, loss, disappointment, and betrayal. We all feel these feelings at times, and your anime characters should, too.

This crying anime boy tutorial brings together concepts covered in the past few chapters. You'll start your character as you did the anime head base drawing.

You will craft him in a similar way to the smiling anime boy, but this time, he won't be smiling.

Instead, you will give him negative eyebrows and the closed eyes with tears and frowning mouth of the crying anime facial expression.

Step-by-Step Tutorial for Drawing an Anime Boy Crying

This easy anime drawing guide will help you draw a tearful boy.

1. Begin by drawing the guideline grid. This will help you place the facial features in later steps.

First, draw a circle with a straight, vertical line passing through it. Draw a horizontal line perpendicular to the first. It should be placed below the midpoint of the circle and reach the circle's edges.

Below the circle, draw another, smaller horizontal line.

2. Draw the bottom portion of the face, using the guidelines. Use curved lines to draw and detail the ears. They should diverge from the head where the horizontal line meets the circle.

From the base of one ear, extend a long curved line. Extend it around the end of the vertical guideline to meet the base of the opposite ear. Notice how it contours the jaw and chin in the process.

Enclose a small curved shape halfway between the horizontal lines, just to the left of the vertical line. This indicates the nose.

3. Erase the bottom of the original circle. Then, use the grid to place the eyes. Draw the thick curved lines of the tightly closed eyes between the ears and the central vertical line, just below the horizontal line. Notice the short curved lines that indicate wrinkles around the nose.

Draw the negative style eyebrows centered above the eyes. They should be at least twice the distance from the horizontal line as are the eyes.

4. Erase the longer horizontal grid line. Then, use the vertical line and remaining horizontal line to place the mouth.

Center the mouth over the perpendicular grid. Use a long curved line to enclose the irregular round shape. Then, use additional curved lines to outline the upper and lower teeth, and the tongue.

Draw a short curved line beneath the mouth. Use two more lines to outline the neck.

5. Anime expressions are often exaggerated, and anime tears are no different. Rather than individual teardrops, you will draw a stream coming from the eyes.

First, erase the remaining grid. Draw full and partial oval shapes overlapping the closed eyes. Then, draw curved parallel lines from the eyes to the jawline. Enclose a round teardrop at the bottom on one side.

Complete the boy's neck and shoulders using curved lines.

What to draw next?

You've drawn a sad anime boy, but can you make him feel happy, surprised, or angry? Try changing his crying face to reflect a range of different anime facial expressions?

If you're looking for some more inspiration then you should check this easy, step-by-step sad anime face cartoon drawing tutorial. Pay attention to the large, expressive eyes and how they add up to describing the sadness feeling.

Afterward, think about how each of these facial expressions is used in the context of your character's unique story. Would he wear an angry face as in this anime fighting drawing? If he became an anime vampire, what type of expression might he wear? If your comic was written with a gender reversal, what would he look like as an angry girl drawing?

Can you imagine why the boy is sad? Maybe he broke up with the girl in this kiss drawing? Or found out he has an anime vampire girlfriend.

Finally, are you able to make this anime female head drawing cry?
