Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing Mars

How to Draw a Great Looking Mars for Kids and Beginners - Step 1

1. Begin by drawing a circle. Erase portions of the circle and replace them with oddly bulging curved lines. This outlines craters on the planet’s surface.
Drawing Step 2

2. Draw another crater. Use overlapping curved lines to sketch a round shape. Make another round layer around these lines, and another. Draw short curved lines descending from the crater.

3. Draw a second crater. Again, draw layers of curved lines to outline an irregular rounded shape. Draw short lines outside the crater. Notice that these lines run in the opposite direction from the other crater.
Drawing Step 4

4. Draw several smaller, simpler craters, with two curved lines outlining the round depressions. Draw short lines descending from some of these craters. Fill in one of the craters on the planet’s outline in this manner.
Drawing Step 5

5. Enclose irregular shapes and draw wavy, curved lines across the planet’s surface. This adds texture to the planet.
Drawing Step 6

6. Draw more round shapes and curved lines across the surface of the planet.
Drawing Step 7

7. Detail one of the craters on the planet’s outline. Then, draw wavy lines around it.

Learn More About The Mars Drawing
“We are all… children of this universe. Not just Earth, or Mars, or this system, but the whole grand fireworks.
And if we are interested in Mars at all, it is only because we wonder over our past and worry terribly about our possible future.”
— Ray Bradbury, "Mars and the Mind of Man"
In our solar system, Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. It is, in many ways, similar to our own planet.
Mars has clouds, wind, ice caps, canyons, volcanoes, and 24-hour days. One year on Mars lasts about 687 Earth days, twice the length of our own year.
Because water (in the form of ice) is present on Mars, it is considered the most likely candidate for hosting life - human or indigenous - beyond the earth.
Mars was named for the Roman god of war. Its moons are named after Mars' sons Phobos and Deimos, whose names mean "fear" and "terror," respectively.

Did you know? You can see Mars, for the planet is often visible to the naked eye. It appears small and star-like with a reddish hue. With a telescope, the clouds and surface of the planet can be observed.
It has been said that Mars is the first planet to be inhabited entirely by robots. Many unmanned and robotic missions have been sent to explore the surface of the planet.
Mars has long played a role in popular culture. In ancient times, some people believed that its presence in the sky heralded negative events on Earth.
During the past 100 years, it has often been the subject of science fiction. Examples include H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds and books by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Ray Bradbury, and others. Aliens are often referred to as Martians.
