"Good night, sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite."
- Traditional maxim

There are about 75 species of bedbug that feed on human blood. These flat insects are usually about 5 mm (0.2 inches) long. Their wings are vestigial, which means they cannot fly. They hide in dark places, like the seams of a mattress, the joints of furniture, or a crack in the wall.

Bed bug bites can cause an itchy rash, but the animals are not known to spread disease. Bed bugs are found all over the world. They are common in densely populated areas and places frequented by travelers, such as hotels. They migrate from one location to another by clinging to clothing, suitcases, or other objects.

Bed bugs are notorious for being difficult to eradicate once an infestation occurs. They can live for up to one year without food. For this reason, many travelers carefully check their accommodations before unpacking their belongings. Pesticides, washing clothing at high temperature, vacuuming, steaming, and raising the temperature to 122 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees Celsius) for an hour and a half may be attempted to exterminate bed bugs.

Did you know? Scientists are researching the secretions of bed bugs. Why? Because the chemicals they produce inhibit bacteria and fungi. Bed bugs may someday lead to medical breakthroughs in the fight against disease.
