Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Cargo Ship

How to Draw a Great Looking Cargo Ship for Kids and Beginners - Step 1

1. Begin the cargo ship outline by drawing a curved "V" shape line. From the top of the "V," extend a long curved line. Notice how it has two angled corners. This begins the outline of the boat's hull.
Drawing Step 2

2. Draw wavy lines at the base of the "V" shaped line, indicating splashing water as the ship moves through the ocean. Then, extend a long curved line from the waves to the back of the boat.
This is the waterline, and it fully encloses the hull. Above the hull, use straight lines to draw rectangular prisms of the deck of the ship.

Drawing Step 3

3. Draw a checkerboard pattern of straight lines across the rectangular prisms. This adds the detail that they are stacks of cargo containers. Enclose another rectangular prism near the back of the boat.
Drawing Step 4

4. Draw a checkerboard pattern of straight lines on the rectangular prism drawn in the previous step.
Then, begin drawing the crane used to heft the cargo containers. First, draw a tall, narrow trapezoid with a tiny trapezoid on top.
Draw a vertical line down its center and extend a rectangular prism from its side, erasing as necessary. Draw an irregular hexagon at the bottom of this armature.
Drawing Step 5

5. Draw a straight line between the arm and the small trapezoid on top. Below the hexagon, enclose a tiny anchor outline. Then draw a second crane just like the first.
Drawing Step 6

6. Draw the anchor of the second crane, then draw the ship's bridge. This is where the captain steers the ship. Use straight lines to enclose the irregular geometric shape.
On its front, draw a rectangle and cross it with vertical lines to form the windows. Draw a circle above the bridge, and connect it to the bridge with two straight, diagonal lines.
Drawing Step 7

7. Draw more square windows on the bridge tower. On top of it, use straight lines and a shaded circle to draw radio antennas.
Draw two rectangles on the front or bow of the ship, and use straight lines to give them an inset, three-dimensional appearance. Texture the hull with long curved lines.
Add More Details to Your Cargo Ship Picture - Step 8

8. Draw more small rectangles on the bow, then use a straight line to draw the horizon. Use curved lines to enclose fluffy clouds in the sky.
Complete the Outline of Your Cargo Ship Drawing - Step 9

9. Draw one more cloud, and texture the surface of the water with wavy lines.
Color Your Cargo Ship Drawing

Your cartoon cargo ship outline is now complete. Color your picture. Cargo ships are often a dull gray, but the containers they carry are brightly colored.
