Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Heliconia

How to Draw a Great Looking Heliconia for Kids and Beginners - Step 1

1. Begin the heliconia outline by drawing an incomplete teardrop shape, one that is open on the bottom.
Then, use curved lines to enclose several more teardrop shapes, one overlapping the other. These are the plant's bracts or colorful modified leaves. But most people think of them as flowers or petals.
Drawing Step 2

2. Draw five more overlapping teardrop-shaped bracts. Use two curved lines for each.

Drawing Step 3

3. Close the opening of the bottom bract with a small "V" shaped line. Extend two lines below it to form the stem. Extend a pair of curved lines from one side of the stem and allow them to meet at a sharp point.
At the base of the stem, enclose two large incomplete teardrop shapes, using two curved lines for each. These are the plant's leaves.
Drawing Step 4

4. Draw a second heliconia plant. Again, create a stack of overlapping teardrop shapes.
Drawing Step 5

5. Draw a few more overlapping teardrop shapes at the top of the flower. Extend two lines from the bottom bract to form the stem.
Then, use curved lines to enclose two large leaves at the base of the plant. Finally, draw the first incomplete teardrop-shaped bract of a third heliconia plant.
Drawing Step 6

6. Draw four more overlapping teardrop-shaped bracts. Then draw a leaf. This time, we'll make it three-dimensional. Use two curved lines, and extend one past the tip.
Then, use a third curved line to meet it, enclosing the leaf tip viewed from a different angle.
Drawing Step 7

7. Use curved lines to draw the plant's stem and a second leaf. Then, draw a large teardrop-shaped leaf on the stem of each of the first two plants.

8. Use a series of connected "U" shaped lines to create the wavy pollen-bearing structures on top of each bract. Draw a curved line for the vein down the middle of each leaf.
