Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Tarantula

How to Draw a Great Looking Tarantula for Kids and Beginners - Step 1

1. Begin the cartoon tarantula outline by sketching the arachnid's head. First, draw the chelicerae, two claw-like appendages on the front of the face. Use two curved lines and two long "U" shaped lines.
Then, enclose the fuzzy head around the chelicerae, using long and short curved lines that meet at jagged points. Then, shade two small oval-shaped eyes at the front of the head.
Drawing Step 2

2. Draw a curved line across the front of the face, then begin drawing the pedipalps, short leglike appendages.
Draw the pedipalps in segments, using long curved lines for the sides of each segment and zig zag lines to connect them.

3. Complete the second pedipalm, then begin drawing the much longer walking legs.
Again, draw the legs in segments, using long curved lines for the sides of each segment and zig zag lines to connect them. Conclude each leg with a "U" shaped line.
Drawing Step 4

4. Complete the second walking leg and begin the third.
Again, draw the legs in segments, using long curved lines for the sides of each segment and zig zag lines to connect them. Conclude the legs with "U" shaped lines.
Drawing Step 5

5. Complete the third leg, draw the fourth leg, and begin the fifth leg.
Drawing Step 6

6. Draw the third set of walking legs.
Drawing Step 7

7. Complete the sixth leg with a "U" shaped line and begin drawing the seventh leg. Enclose the large, round abdomen behind the head.
Notice the short lines that meet at jagged points, giving it a hairy appearance.

Color Your Tarantula Drawing

Your cartoon tarantula outline is now complete. Tarantulas are often black, brown, or gray, but some have bright markings - blue, orange, or pink, for example.
We've colored ours to match the Mexican red knee tarantula, which is dark brown with orange and cream bands on its body and legs.

Did you know? Tarantulas get their name from a city in Italy - Taranto. Long ago, it was thought that the bite of the hairy spiders that lived there could be cured by a wild dance called the tarantella.
As it turns out, the spider in question was not dangerous to humans, nor are tarantulas dangerous today.
