Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing an Ankylosaurus

How to Draw a Great Looking Ankylosaurus for Kids and Beginners - Step 1

1. Begin the cartoon Ankylosaurus outline by drawing the dinosaur’s face. Use curved lines to enclose a rounded diamond shape - the dinosaur’s beak.
Shade two small ovals above it to form the nostrils, and extend a curved line for the side of the face.
Next, enclose the half-circle eye using two curved lines, and shade a round pupil inside it. Use a curved line for the brow above it.
Drawing Step 2

2. Draw three rounded triangles around the face. Use overlapping curved lines to connect the triangles and enclose the shape of the face. Notice the round bulge at the base of each triangular horn.

Drawing Step 3

3. Draw a series of rounded, curved triangles along the dinosaur’s side. Then, use long curved lines to sketch the overlapping armored plates to which these spikes are attached.
Drawing Step 4

4. Draw a few more, smaller spikes in line with the others. Then draw another set higher on the armor plates. Finally, use long curved lines to enclose a few more armored plates.
Drawing Step 5

5. Draw three more rows of triangular spikes along the ankylosaur’s back, erasing as necessary. Extend a curved line below the head, and another overlapping it. This forms the chest and part of the front leg.
Drawing Step 6

6. Use a series of overlapping curved lines to draw the opposite side of the leg, the belly, and the sides of the rear leg.
Draw four rounded, triangular toes on the front foot, and connect them with short “V” shaped lines.
Drawing Step 7

7. Complete the rear leg, drawing four rounded, triangular toes and connecting them with curved lines.
Then, draw the remaining foreleg. Again, use curved lines for the sides of the leg and rounded triangles for the toes.

8. Draw the ankylosaur’s famous club-shaped tail. First, extend a pair of long curved lines. Connect them on the end with a series of curved lines to produce a bulbous, three-lobed shape.
Draw a curved line down the center of the tail, and enclose four small, rounded triangle spikes below it.
