Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Baboon

How to Draw a Great Looking Baboon for Kids and Beginners - Step 1

1. Begin the cartoon baboon outline by drawing the animal’s face. Use curved lines to enclose the rectangular eyes, and shade a small oval inside each.
From one eye, extend a long curved line to outline the snout. Draw curved lines at the tip of the nose for the nostrils and at the corner of the mouth. Shade two triangular nostrils at the tip of the nose.
Drawing Step 2

2. Use curved lines to sketch the details of the face - the lower jaw, sides of the face, upper eyelids, and brows.

Drawing Step 5

5. From the shoulder, extend a pair of long lines to form the arm. Connect them at the bottom with a series of jagged lines. Then use overlapping curved lines to draw the paw.

6. Use a series of jagged curved lines to draw the torso and the rear leg.
Drawing Step 7

7. Use a series of jagged curved lines to sketch the remaining foreleg. Then, use overlapping curved lines to draw the paws.

9. Complete the paw, using overlapping curved lines for the toes. Then draw the long tail, completing the outline.
Note the jagged fur at the tip of the tail. Finally, draw a series of jagged curved lines around the base of the tail.

As ground-dwellers who climb trees only occasionally, baboons resemble their larger cousins, the great apes, like the one in this gorilla drawing.
But baboons are still considered monkeys, not apes. Do you know why? Compare the gorilla to this monkey drawing to find out.
Hint: Monkeys have long prehensile tails which they use to grab things, including tree branches when they climb. Apes have no tails at all!
