Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Mermaid Tail

How to Draw a Great Looking Mermaid Tail for Kids and Beginners - Step 1

1. Begin the mermaid tail outline by drawing a series of curved lines to create an incomplete pentagon shape. This outlines the mermaid's human abdomen and the top of her fishy tail.
Drawing Step 2

2. Next, draw wavy, curved lines around the top of the tail. Notice that the lines don't attach at the front of the tail.

Drawing Step 3

3. Extend long, curved lines from the top of the tail to outline the sides of the tail. At the bottom, connect the lines with a zig-zag line.
Drawing Step 4

4. Extend another long, curved line from the end of the tail. This will become the flowing tail fin. Draw a wavy, curved line that nearly meets the previous line to outline the end of the fin.
Drawing Step 5

5. Draw a curved line from the wavy line to the tip of the tail. Then, create a near-mirror image on the opposite side.
Extend a long curved line from the body of the tail, and continue the wavy line at the end of the tail. These new lines should nearly meet but not connect.
Drawing Step 6

6. Draw a curved line connecting the tip of the tail to its side. Then enclose small fins above the tail fin using wavy lines.
Drawing Step 7

7. Detail the caudal or tail fin. Draw a wavy line across the end of it, and extend two curved lines across its middle.

8. Draw more curved lines across the tail fin, indicating its soft rays. Shade a small oval for the belly button, and begin using groups of "U" shaped lines to texture the scales.
