Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Numbat

How to Draw a Great Looking Numbat for Kids and Beginners - Step 1

1. Begin the numbat outline by drawing the animal’s face. Enclose an irregular round shape for the nose, and extend curved lines from the top and bottom to outline the snout.
On the top of the head, use a series of short lines that meet at jagged points to give the appearance of fur.
Then, enclose the eye using two curved lines that don’t quite meet at the corners. Shade a round pupil in the center of the eye.
Drawing Step 2

2. For each ear, extend a curved line upward from the head and double it back on itself.
Contour the near ear with a curved line. Extend a curved line from the ear to form the back of the neck and from the snout to form the lower jaw.
Enclose two round shapes within the nose to indicate the nostrils and use a series of short lines to draw the brow above the eye.

Drawing Step 3

3. Use short lines to texture the furry cheek. Then, use a series of jagged and overlapping curved lines to draw the neck, chest, and foreleg. As you draw the first toe, leave room for the teardrop-shaped claw.
Drawing Step 4

4. Finish the first paw, using curved lines to draw the toes and placing a teardrop-shaped claw at the tip of each.
Then, draw the remaining foreleg, noting the furry texture on the front of the leg and the dewclaw on the side of the foot. Again, use teardrop shapes to form the claws.
Drawing Step 5

5. Extend a long curved line from the back of the neck to form the animal’s back. Then, use an overlapping series of lines to draw the belly and rear leg, noticing the short lines that connect at jagged points.
Drawing Step 6

6. Complete the rear foot, using curved lines to outline the toes and teardrop shapes for the claws. Then, draw the remaining leg, again using jagged lines to give it a furry texture.
Drawing Step 7

7. Complete the rear paw, using curved lines to outline the toes and teardrop shapes for the claws. Then, draw the numbat’s bushy tail. Use two sets of curved lines that meet at jagged points.

Numbats don't have any close relatives to compare them to. They are about the size and shape of a meerkat, but they have stripes and coloration similar to a chipmunk.
They eat termites, so they have a long tongue and snout like an anteater.
