You'll notice that our pixel art drawing tutorials are different in that they utilize a pixel art drawing grid. If you are drawing by hand, you can use graph paper or use a ruler to make a grid of any size.

This tutorial uses two types of lines - thick lines made by shading entire squares and thin lines traced around the outer edges of the grid squares.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing Mario Pixel Art

1. Begin with a pixel art grid by sketching a series of diagonal squares. Note that some of the squares have a third square between them, forming a "V" shape. Then, on the top, draw a horizontal line of eight squares.

At its opposite end, draw two vertical squares connected at the corner. This begins the outline of Mario's head.

2. Draw the brim of the cap. Shade four horizontal lines of squares - seven, ten, three, and five squares. Note that some of the lines connect at the corners while others overlap.

3. Outline the side and bottom of Mario's face. Shade a vertical line of four squares, an "L" shaped line of four squares, a horizontal line of eight squares, and a single square.

4. Complete the remaining side of Mario's face and his nose. For the bottom of the nose, you will draw horizontal lines of two, four, and five squares. For the forehead, the lines will be two, two, and four squares. The nose is completed with a vertical segment of two squares and a single square.

5. Shade two squares to form Mario's eye. Indicate his hair and ear with an inverted "Y" shaped set of squares. Beneath the head, draw three diagonal squares and a vertical set of two squares.

6. Complete the arm with a single, two-square, and "W" shaped set of blocks. Then, draw the front of the body with a single square, three vertical squares, and two horizontal squares.

7. Draw the extended leg and foot. Draw the top using horizontal lines of two squares each. Then, round out the foot with "Z" shaped lines. Connect the foot to the body with a horizontal line of five squares.

8. Draw a "W" shaped line between the foot and the body to indicate the remaining arm. Trace the remaining leg by shading "V" and "L" shaped segments, horizontal lines of two and four squares, and a single square.

9. Draw a square around four squares in the middle of the figure. Then, trace thinner lines to add detail to the character. These lines should travel around the edges of the squares without shading them; they mark differences in color.

Use thin lines to detail the front of the shirt and to separate the hands and feet from the arms and legs.
