"And the walls came tumbling down in the city that we love."
- "Pompeii," song by Bastille

The brick is an ancient building material that is still in use today. Sun-dried bricks of clay were first produced around 6,000 years ago. Modern bricks are often hardened in a very hot oven.

Like a link to the past, bricks were used in ancient Egypt, in medieval castles, and can still likely be seen as part of the structure of your own home or school building.

Bricks are often used as stately decorative elements on the outside of houses, buildings, and other structures. The bricks in our drawing guide, however, show signs of urban decay - the "process by which a previously functioning city, or part of a city, falls into disrepair and decrepitude."

Sometimes, though, this appearance of bricks through crumbling plaster is used as a design element to make an interior or exterior wall of a home or business look aged.

Would you like to draw a cartoon of a crumbling brick wall? This easy, step-by-step cartoon drawing tutorial is here to show you how. All you will need is a pen, pencil, or marker and a sheet of paper. You may also wish to color your finished drawing.

4. Begin drawing the bricks. Whole bricks should resemble horizontal rectangles with rounded corners. You will need to enclose partial rectangles along the edges of the shape. Note, too, that some of the bricks have natural-looking irregularities - indentions into or protrusions from the shape of the rectangle.
