4. Draw the sepals, the small leaves at the base of the flower. Draw a "U" shaped line. From it, extend pairs of curved lines that meet at sharp points. Notice how on one of the sepals, the lines cross over one another, indicating the dry, twisted shape of the sepal.

Learn More About The Dead Rose Drawing

“The rose she had offered was truly an enchanted rose, which would bloom until his twenty-first year.

If he could learn to love another, and earn her love in return by the time the last petal fell, then the spell would be broken.

If not, he would be doomed to remain a beast for all time.”
― Narrator, Disney's Beauty and the Beast

Red roses have long been used to symbolize love. But a wilted, dead, or dying rose can mean a fading of hope and love or even the end of life.

The most memorable depiction may be the enchanted rose from Beauty and the Beast. It was kept beneath glass to ensure that the last petal would not fall a moment too soon.

Historically, wilted flowers have been used in the vanitas genre of still life art. These paintings consist of "a collection of luxurious, richly-detailed objects, all of which symbolize the brevity of life of the futility of worldly pleasures."

Interestingly, Beauty and the Beast is full of other vanitas symbols as well, including clocks, candles, mirrors, broken pottery, books, musical instruments, globes, and chess sets.
