Nearly 60 species of falcons live in various climates throughout the world. They are birds of prey like vultures but resemble to the related hawks and eagles. Falcons are known for their speed and grace. In fact, a diving peregrine falcon is the fastest animal in the world. They often nest on the sides of cliffs or tall buildings.

Falconry or hawking is a sport practiced since prehistoric times. Falcons or other raptors are raised and trained by the falconer to hunt small game. The term "falcon" is derived from the Latin word for "sickle," describing the curved shape of the falcon's claw.

Falcon characters often make appearances in cartoons and other media. One example is Hayabusa, the falcon belonging to the villainous Shan Yu in Disney's Mulan. Frightful was a peregrine falcon and the main character's companion in the novel My Side of the Mountain.
