3. Draw candles on top of the smaller layer, erasing as necessary. For each candle, use two parallel curved lines.

Connect them at the bottom with a smaller line and at the top with an irregular shape. This indicates the melting wax. Then, draw a short line to form the wick.

Drawing Step 4

4. Next, draw a flame on top of each candle. For each flame, draw a small teardrop shape within a slightly larger one.

Then, begin drawing a present beside the cake. Use curved lines for the sides of the box, and to sketch the bow - large rounded shapes for the lobes of the box, a smaller one for the knot, and two curved lines that end in a "V" for the ribbon.

Drawing Step 5

5. Use straight or slightly curved lines to draw the remaining sides of the box and the ribbons wrapped around it. Then, begin the square shape of a second present, and the rounded bow on top.

Drawing Step 6

6. Complete the sides and the ribbon of the second present, and add more lobes to the bow on top. Then, draw a third present behind the first - the square box and the bow.

Finally, draw an oval floating in the air beside the cake. This will become a balloon in the next step.

Drawing Step 7

7. Complete the balloon by enclosing an irregular shape at the bottom and extending a curved line from it.

Then, draw more balloons. For some, start with ovals, and for others, hearts. Draw an irregular shape and a curved line at the bottom of each. Notice that one balloon is wearing a triangular party hat!

Why do we celebrate birthdays? The history of birthdays dates back to the ancient Egyptians. Pharaohs celebrated their birth or "rebirth" into a god, in accord with their religious beliefs.

The ancient Greeks also celebrated birthdays. They believed that birthdays welcomed evil spirits, but that a good spirit attended each person's birth, and that "this spirit kept watch and had a mystic relation with the god on whose birthday that particular individual was born."

Candles, noisemakers, and the protection of family and friends were also thought to fend off evil spirits.

Did you know? It seems that celebrating birthdays didn't begin until calendars were created. This makes sense, as calendars allowed for exact record-keeping.

Birthday candles also originated in ancient Greek religion. Sacrifices to the goddess Artemis included moon-shaped cakes with candles. Making a wish and then blowing out the candles sent the wish as a prayer to the gods.
