Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Quail

How to Draw a Great Looking Quail for Kids and Beginners - Step 1

1. Begin the quail outline by drawing the bird's face. Use a curved line to enclose a triangle shape, the top of the beak. Use another curved line for the bottom of the beak.
Extend curved lines above and below the beak to begin the face and neck. Shade a small circle for the eye, and draw curved lines above and below it, but don't let them touch at the corners.
Drawing Step 2

2. Extend the line of the neck to sketch the bird's belly. At the top of the head, draw a series of curved lines that meet at jagged points. Double it back on itself to sketch the topknot or head plume.
Then, draw a series of overlapping curved lines to form the back of the head. Contour the nostril and above the eye with short lines.

Drawing Step 3

3. Extend a long curved line from the back of the neck to form the bird's back.
Then, below the belly, use a series of curved lines that meet at jagged points to sketch the quail's upper leg. Draw teardrop-shaped claws below it, and use curved lines to sketch the lower leg and toes.
Drawing Step 4

4. Complete the first leg then draw the remaining leg. Again, use a series of jagged lines for the top of the leg, teardrop shapes for the toenails, and curved lines for the lower leg and toes.
Drawing Step 5

5. Finish the quail's foot. Outline the wing using a series of jagged curved lines.
Drawing Step 6

6. Use connected "U" shaped lines to add texture to the wing and enclose the tail.
Drawing Step 7

7. Use long, overlapping lines to add more feather texture to the wing. Then, use closely spaced or jagged curved lines to indicate the stripe across the head.

8. Continue the stripe below the eye and between the eye and the beak. Enclose pointed shapes alongside the wing, and texture the feathers of the upper leg.

9. Finish contouring the belly feathers with connected "U" shaped lines and pointed shapes.
Color Your Quail Drawing

Your cartoon quail outline is now complete. Color your bird. There are many different types of quail, and each looks a little different.
Most have striking black and white markings on their faces and brown, cream, and gray patterns on their bodies. Some sport bold colors, such as blue or reddish-orange.
