Athena or Athene was the Greek goddess of war, reason, and wisdom. Her arena was the "intellectual and civilized side of war and the virtues of justice and skill." In times of peace, she was a goddess of skilled crafts such as weaving. She was the protectress of the city of Athens. In Roman mythology, she went by the name Minerva.

Athena was said to be the daughter of Zeus, but she had no mother. Instead, she emerged from his forehead, fully grown. She never had children or consort and was considered a virgin. Her symbols were the owl and the snake.

Artwork, especially sculptural reliefs, depicting Athena date back thousands of years. An immense statue of Athena stands in the Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. This Parthenon is a full-scale replica of the Parthenon that stood on the acropolis of ancient Athens.
