The banana gets its name from the Arabic word for finger. This is because wild bananas were about the size of your finger. They also had large seeds.

Did you know? The yellow banana eaten around the world is called a Cavendish or dessert banana. It became popular during the 1950s after a fungus decimated the Gros Michel banana, which was "richer and sweeter" than the bananas of today.

You may also find green bananas called plantains or platanos in your local market. This fruit is often cooked in savory, salty dishes.
