Have you ever seen a smiling cat statue waving from a shop or restaurant window? In Japanese, it is called maneki-neko, meaning "welcoming cat" or "beckoning cat." Would you like to learn how to draw a lucky cat?

Throughout history, cats have played a role in mythology. They were thought to possess supernatural or magical powers.

In one Japanese legend, a cat washing its face - a gesture similar to that of the lucky cat - was thought to portend a visitor.

The lucky cat symbol is thought to bring good fortune, prosperity, and wealth to its owner.

Lucky cats have been around since at least the 1800s. In one folktale, a temple cat beckoned to a warrior who sat beneath a tree during a storm.

After the samurai left the tree, it was struck by lightning; the cat had saved his life. The cat was then honored with a statue, the first lucky cat.

In another story, a poor shopkeeper took in a starving stray cat. In gratitude, the cat sat outside the shop, beckoning for customers to enter.

Whether the right or left paw is raised also has meaning. If the left paw is raised, the purpose is to beckon more customers.

If the right paw is raised, it welcomes more money. You can adjust this lucky cat outline to raise either paw.
